Li-ion battery printed using 3D Printing technology

Lithium Ion battery:

Li-ion batteries widely used in all fields. They are rechargeable batteries comes under the primary batteries. Lithium acts as an anode so they referred as Lithium-Metal batteries. The use of Lithium, ions transferred between anode and cathode. They withstand for a long time and have high charge density as compared to other batteries. Due to this character, they are available in high cost. This is also flammable and should handle with care.

The usage of Li-ion battery increased in the last two decades. Now used in laptops, mobile phones, Electric cars.etc., Though it has quite good advantages, its size is a considerable factor for designing any new devices and occupies a large area.  To make a small change in the size of the battery, 3D Printing is quite helpful.

Mostly, Lithium-ion batteries are available in cylindrical or rectangular shapes. While designing any product like a cell phone, the manufacturer first allocates size and shape for the battery. This leads to waste space and limits the design features.

3D Design:

3D Printing is a new technology to create an object. They build the object layer by layer to create a complex design. The object designed using a 3D scanner and CAD technology. Using this technique, we can assemble an entire device, including the components, battery, and structure of an object almost in any regular/irregular shape. The polymers used for printing any object is PolyLactic acid (PLA)which are not ionic conductors in nature, which creates a major delay in designing the battery. Researchers have successfully developed a process to design the complete lithium-ion batteries using an ultra-cheap 3D printer.

Features of Li-ion battery:

The ionic conductor increased in PLA material by mixing with an electrolyte solution. Moreover, the conductivity property increased by adding carbon nanotubes or graphene into anode or cathode.

To prove this great work initially, researchers printed an LED bangle bracelet, also contains the Lithium-ion battery inside. This bangle battery power up LED present in the bangle for every 60 seconds.

This 3D printed Battery has a capacity of two orders of magnitudes more than the normal battery. This has to increased by replacing PLA based materials in the paste of the 3D printer.
